Indicators of low-birth weight in the health area from

ABSTRACT

An epidemiological, retrospective study, of descriptive type was carried out in 28 underweight newborns in the health area from "José Martí Pérez" Teaching Polyclinic in Santiago de Cuba, from January to September, 2012, aimed at determining the incidence of low-birth weight and to identify some risk factors related to it, based on the variables: maternal age, history of underweight newborns, toxic habits, occupation, parity, nutritional status of the pregnant woman, weight gain during the pregnancy and the presence of some diseases associated to pregnancy. Among the most important results there were: low birth weight index of 6.6%, maternal age from 18 to 24 years (53.6%), being a housewife as occupation during pregnancy (42.8%), anemia (89.3%) and vaginal infection (50.0%) as diseases associated with pregnancy, insufficient weight gain in the pregnant woman (46.6%) and primiparity (35.7%).
