ABSTRACT

Introduction: Lymphedema is a chronic disease of universal distribution, with great psychosocial impact. Its supported increase and the need of an early identification of predisposing factors have been predicted.
Objective: to identify the main diseases or events associated to Lymphedema in El Cerro Municipality.
Methods: 346 people were worked who were divided into two groups: 330 without Lymphedema and 16 with Lymphedema. A module of questions aimed at getting the necessary information was applied. Proportions were calculated and the groups were compared between them.
Results: a prevalence of inflammatory diseases was found (n= 31; 8. 95 %), followed by surgical events (n= 21; 6.06 %), cancer in any location (n= 18; 5.20 %) and congenital conditions (n=14; 4.04 %) as the most frequent events. Family antecedent of Lymphedema was confirmed only in the group of people that suffered from it. When comparing the groups between them, it was observed that recurrent lymphangitis, breast cancer, axillary surgery, axillary radiotherapy and venous thrombosis were more frequent in the group with Lymphedema and a significant association (p‹0,001) was appreciated between both groups. Neither Angiodysplasia nor Lymphatic Filariasis cases were detected.
Conclusions: in the search for ways to expect or predict the presence of Lymphedema, family antecedents of the disease, recurrent lymphangitis, breast cancer suffering, the use of radiotherapy, axillary surgery and deep venous thrombosis should be born in mind as events and associated diseases that anticipate its occurrence.
