ABSTRACT
The results obtained in an experiment with laboratory animals depend, mostly of the
environment created for each investigation, to the point that a mishandling of it may
invalidate the test. Among those most influential factors in an experiment are: the box or
cage, bed, temperature, humidity and air gas composition and air particulate. The
objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effect of cane bagasse bed in the blood
glucose levels in Wistar rats. Blood glucose levels were studied in (after a fast of 16
hours) of 20 healthy female Wistar rats at 7, 8, 9 and 10 weeks after born, by
glucometer and Biosensors SUMA. In order to evaluate the influence of the bed, at week
8, we proceeded to change the bed of wood chips for cane bagasse, one hour before
performing the corresponding measurement of blood glucose. This bed was maintained
for 72 hours. Applying nonparametric tests, it was found that the average values of
blood glucose obtained on week 8 were significantly higher than the rest of the weeks.
Furthermore it was verified that prolonged intake of the material for more than 72 hours
modified the blood glucose values in the following week but by week 10, levels below
110 mg/dl were restored in all animals. It is concluded that the bed of cane bagasse
significantly modifies blood glucose levels in Wistar rats, therefore investigators must
select the most appropriate bedding material when used in experimental models for the
study of metabolic diseases.
