ABSTRACT

Background: cancer has been one of the major causes of death in Cuba. In addition, it is the leading cause of years of potential life lost and it has the greatest impact on life expectancy at birth.
Objective: to characterize cancer mortality in the province of Cienfuegos from 2010 to 2011.
Methods: a descriptive case series study was conducted in order to characterize mortality in the province of Cienfuegos over the period 2010-2011, according to data obtained from death certificates and a review of the Mortality Statistics Program of the province. The series included 1602 cancer-related deaths, 786 of them in the year 2010 and 816 in 2011. The variables used were age, sex, municipality of residence and leading cancer sites.
Results: cancer was the second cause of death in the province of Cienfuegos in the year 2010 and the first cause in 2011. A male over-mortality was found in both periods. Men death was due to lung, prostate, colon and larynx cancer whereas women suffered from lung, breast, colon and cervical cancer. Premature death caused by cancer accounted for 59,2 % of all cancer deaths in 2010; 47,9 % of them were in the group aged 65 to 74 years. Premature death in 2011 represented the 54,1 % of all deaths caused by this disease, with a slight decrease.
Conclusions: showed the inclusion of cancer as the leading cause of death associated population aging progression with locations showing gaps in prevention and early detection of cancer.
