ABSTRACT

Tumors of the spine are primary or metastatic destructive processes. They are classified as benign and malignant. Although the benign destroy normal bone tissue they do not tend to invade other tissue while the malignant lesions do, which also have the potential to destroy other segments of the spine and other distant organs, also known as metastatic lesions. All spinal secondary tumors which originate in a different organ than the spine are considered malignant. The diagnosis and treatment of primary and metastatic tumors of the spine have been studied intensely, with the objective of improving the opportunity in the diagnosis using different laboratory analysis and imaging, done to adequately treat each patient while avoiding or reducing neurological damage and maintaining mechanical stability of the spine. The creation and update of Practice Guidelines will assist in helping the patient who has destruction of one or more segments of the spine.
