ABSTRACT

Introduction: the need of adopting gender approach in dealing with health problems means to precisely visualize the multiple ways in which the gender constructions bring about inequality situations that affect health.
Objective: to characterize the prescription drug consumption in the adult female population of Cuba.
Methods: cross-sectional and descriptive research study conducted in 2007. The sample was made up of 554 females who took pharmaceuticals. For data collection, a questionnaire called "drug consumption" was designed and validated by a group of experts and a pilot study was carried out.
Results: over half of the surveyed women were consuming prescription drugs; the retired workers (79) consumed the most (88.8 %) whereas the students (17) were the ones consuming less pharmaceuticals. The highest percentage (66.4 %) comprising 368 patients mentioned that they always comply with the prescribed drug treatment as indicated.
Conclusions: the prescription drug consumption increases with age, low schooling and in retired women. The most consumed pharmaceutical groups at domestic level are the cardiovascular drugs, antinflammatories, analgesics, antipyretics and psychodrugs.
