Hidden morbidity of prediabetes and diabetes mellitus type 2 in overweight and obese patients

ABSTRACT

A descriptive and cross-sectional study of 203 overweight and obese patients from the age group 25-64 years, belonging to the doctor’s office No. 4 of "Carlos Juan Finlay" Teaching Polyclinic in Santiago de Cuba was carried out from October, 2009 to September, 2010, in order to determine the hidden morbidity of prediabetes and diabetes mellitus type 2 in them, for which the variables age, sex, personal and family pathological history, drugs consumption and sedentary lifestyle were considered. The age group 45-54 and the female sex prevailed in the case material; likewise, the most frequent risk factors were: sedentary lifestyle, drugs consumption, first degree family history of consanguinity and hypertension. Finally, hidden morbidity of diabetes mellitus existed in the population studied, so that the knowledge of prediabetic state is necessary for the prevention and the early diagnosis of the disease.
