ABSTRACT
Owing to conceptual conflicts, the clinical assessment of attached gingiva often results in doubt and confusion, primarily reflecting the fact that the width rather than the volume of this particular epithelium continues to be regarded as the most significant dimension in any such assessment. Exacerbating the issue is the effect that the lack of correlation between this finding and the patient’s oral condition has on the ability to establish an accurate diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment plan. The purpose of this review is to clarify the doubts regarding the importance of the attached gingiva in maintaining periodontal health and in the success of periodontal, orthodontic, and rehabilitation treatments.
