Child labor in the carpet industry, child slave workers, human rights.

ABSTRACT

In Asia, debt bondage condemns millions of children to forced labor. Their parents hand them over through unfair contracts that make debt unpayable. Iqbal Masih was an example of this. At four years he was given up to a carpet manufacturer for a 600 rupee loan that increased twenty times in five years. During his imprisonment he was beaten and chained. In 1992, the Bhatta Mazdoor Mahaz liberation front cancelled his debt. Thereafter, he participated in the liberation of other children, publicly exposing his testimony. Subsequently, he denounced internationally the shamefuy carpet trade and lead a boycott against it, earning international admiration. In 1995 he returned to his country as a celebrity for his defense of the rights of children; and on April 16, he was killed in Muridke by members of the mafia. Iqbal Masih was one of the greatest defenders of human rights in the twentieth century. His life was short and his death untimely, and he became an innocent hero in a hostile and indifferent world. His sacrifice for a fair cause, became a symbol of the struggle against child slavery.
