ABSTRACT

Background: diabetes mellitus is a major health concern worldwide. It is a common health problem in the elderly and a risk factor for atherosclerosis.
Objective: to describe some risk factors for atherosclerosis and its consequential diseases in diabetic elderly patients.
Methods: a case series study involving 47 elderly patients with diabetes mellitus was conducted in the Ruben Batista Rubio Polyclinic in the province of Holguin, from Julio to November 2012. Variables analyzed included: sex, age, risk factors for atherosclerosis and its consequential diseases.
Results: female sex prevailed in the research, accounting for the 72,30 %; 57,44 % of the population was included in the group aged 60 to 65 years. Hypertension (87,23 %) and high cholesterol levels (74,47 %) were the most common atherogenic factors for atherosclerosis. Ischemic heart disease (48,94 %), peripheral arterial disease and retinopathy both with 27,66 %, were the most frequent diseases consequential to atherosclerosis.
Conclusions: among elderly patients, female sex prevailed as well as those between 60 and 65 years old with hypertension and high cholesterol levels. Ischemic heart disease, peripheral arterial disease and retinopathy emerged as diseases consequential to atherosclerosis and diabetes mellitus.
