ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine whether the use of verapamil in the perfusion solution of the graft has impact in delaying the graft function or slow performance as well as in patient and graft survival.
Material and methods: We reviewed the records of patients transplanted from January 2006 to December 2009. During the first two years, verapamil infusion was used and the last two years, it was omitted. Clinical variables were reviewed, kidney function and patient and graft survival.
Results: We studied 72 patients, the mean age was 41 ± 11.3 years (range 9-54), predominantly male, 41.7% (n = 30). Two groups were formed based on the use of verapamil in the perfusion solution of the graft: 32 patients used verapamil and 40 in which it was not used. Delayed graft function was 2.8% (n = 2) and slow performance 1.4% (n = 1), all cases found belonged to the group without verapamil. In the verapamil group there was a slight improvement in renal function (creatinine and clearance of it) in the first seven days, after which it was similar in both groups. No significant difference in survival of patients and grafts.
Conclusion: Renal graft function was similar in all patients in this study, regardless of the use or not of verapamil, as well as both the graft and patient survival at one year evolution.
