Key words:

Helicobacter pylori, recurrent respiratory papillomatosis.

ABSTRACT

Background Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis remains a disease with no cure that causes significant biopsychosocial health impacts in patients, besides representing expenses up to 474,000 dollars for the individual treatment of this disease in a patient whose onset is from infancy. Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium that colonizes the aerodigestive tract, causing inflammation and mucosal damage, factors related to the pathophysiology of recurrent respiratory papillomatosis.
Objective To study the association between the presence of Helicobacter pylori with the clinical course of the recurrent respiratory papillomatosis, to find evidence to justify or not the use of treatment for eradication of this bacterium in patients with recurrent respiratory papillomatosis.
Material and method A subexperimental, observational, prospective study with a consecutive sample of patients with recurrent respiratory papillomatosis, in which presence of H. pylori was studied as well as its association to clinical course of the disease.
Results From our sample of seven patients, only three resulted positive to Helicobacter. When comparing the index relapses/year to the presence of H. pylori we found that there is not a direct association in patients.
Conclusions The presence of H. pylori is not a factor in the course of recurrent respiratory papillomatosis. There is no conclusive data proving the scheme indicate eradication of H. pylori in patients with RRP
