Introduction: In the last decade, with the introduction of new vaccines against the most common causative organisms of acute bacterial meningitis (Haemophilus influenzae b, Neisseria meningitidis and Streptococcus pneumoniae C) and the development of more potent antibiotics with good hematoencephalic penetration, the incidence of the infection has decreased and the prognosis has improved, but the after effects and mortality have not changed significantly. Objective: The main objective of this study was to identify the etiology of meningitis in children under 16 years and over one month old in the Hospital para el Niño del Instituto Materno Infantil del Estado de México. The age group most affected where children under one year with 60.6% of the total sample. The cases were reported more frequently during the winter months. A causative organism in a corresponding was identified in 8.5% of the cases, corresponding to Staphylococcus epidermidis in 66.6% of the cases. Conclusions: Children under one year are most affected.
