ABSTRACT

Although its original description dates from 1873, fat embolism syndrome remains a diagnostic challenge for clinicians. This syndrome is a potentially fatal complication of long bone fractures. The complications after the syndrome highlight the importance of prevention and early detection. Detailed assessment and rapid recognition of the signs and symptoms are key to improving the outcomes of these patients, since the diagnostic is based on clinical features and exclusion of other processes.
