ABSTRACT

Introduction. Gallbladder polyps are an incidental finding on ultrasonography (USG) in approximately 7% of the times. Some of them have been associated with cancer, especially those › 10 mm. When the polyp size is ‹ 10 mm is consider benign and in most cases made of cholesterol. The treatment and surveillance of these benign lesions is unknown. Aim. To explore the effect of ursodesoxicolic acid (UDCA) in the size of the gallbladder polyps, especially in the ‹ 10 mm. Material and methods. We included asymptomatic patients, men and women older than 20 years old, with diagnosis of gallbladder polyps by USG. The individuals received UDCA (500-1,000 mg per day) for several months and were reevaluated by USG to determine the size of the polyp after treatment. Results. seven patients were included, four (57.1%) were men with an average age of 41.8 years old, six of then (85.7%) had dyslipidemia and all of them with overweight. The average number of polyps per patients was 2.3 before UDCA and 1.6 after the treatment. The average variations in size of the polyps were from 5.41 mm to 3.44 mm. Only in one patient the polyp disappears. Conclusion. This report of cases suggests that UDCA reduce the size of the small gallbladder polyps. A more rigorous methodology is required to confirm these observations.
