ABSTRACT

The fear of falling syndrome is a common problem among the elderly, its incidence goes from 20-39% between those who have fallen and 12-23% between those who have not. Objective: Identify if there is a relation between the fear of falling syndrome, activity limitation and participation restriction in the elderly. Material and methods: The fall efficacy scale was applied in order to diagnose the fear of falling syndrome, we detected the activities limitation and participation restriction according to the IFC. Results: 67 patients were interviewed, 44 (65.7%) female with medium age of 71.03 years old. The frequency of presentations for the fear of falling syndrome was 23.9%. 59.7% had fallen. There is a relation between the fear of falling syndrome with age older than 80 years (p = 0.043) and previous falls (p = 0.009). The activity limitation and participation restriction where associated with the fear of falling syndrome (p ‹ 0.05) with one exception in the participation. Conclusions: There is a relation between the fear of falling syndrome, activity limitation and participation restriction with the exception of restriction in religion and spirituality. Age older than 80 years and previous falls where associated factors with the fear of falling syndrome in the elderly.
