Knowledge and foot care in older diabetics in an institution of public health

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The diabetic foot and its complications are a social and economic problem affecting directly and indirectly to family and health institutions, but especially to the person living with the disease since according to some authors (Mollinedo, Saucedo, Trejo, Campos, 2012) the quality of life of patients with diabetic foot is affected because they perceive a decrease in self-esteem, changes in self-concept, inability to perform activities of daily living and their functions social and family. Objective: To determine the relationship between level of knowledge and foot care in older adults attending diabetes in an Institution of public health in Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas. Methodology: Cross-sectional, descriptive, comparative, the sample consisted of 70 older adults attending diabetes control in a public institution of secondary care. Results: The results obtained statistical significance was found between the level of knowledge regarding the degree of diabetic foot assessment, the degree of association between these two variables was measured by Cramer’s V coefficient, which resulted in 0.845. Discussion: In this group of older adults with diabetes mellitus was found in the levels of knowledge, knowledge that the level of good and regularly showed similar results with 30 and 32.8% respectively and 37.2% poor level differing from that reported by Cabrera and Perez et al.
