ABSTRACT

Squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck comprises epithelial neoplasms of the upper aerodigestive tract, including the sinuses, oral and nasal cavities, larynx and pharynx. It represents about 6% of solid tumors. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of head and neck cancer patients attending the Hospital Regional de Alta Especialidad «Ciudad Salud». A retrospective descriptive study was performed, in which the cases diagnosed in the pathology service of this hospital during 2006 to September 2012 were included. During the study period a total of 132 cases of squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck were found, of which 62.9% were in women and 37.1% in men, with a mean age of 58.15 (± 17.63) years. The most common was thyroid cancer, with 24.2%. Contrary to what has been reported in the literature, in this hospital these cancers are most common in women.
