The advantages of laparoscopic cholecystectomy in the elderly: Experience of the ital General de México

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Gallstone are a common pathology in the elderly, of equal way they are most likely to have complications as acute cholecystitis; being the cholecystectomy the only definitive treatment for the above mentioned complications is important that this group of patients, who are in the habit of appearing with multiple added pathologies have a suitable preoperative managing and the surgical procedure is the ideal one for them. Objective: To report the results of the employment of laparoscopic cholecystectomy for the treatment of Gallstone and its complications in the elderly, experience of the General Hospital of Mexico. Design: Clinical, descriptive, transverse, retrospective and observational. Setting: Hospital of the third level of attention. Material and methods: There were included all the laparoscopic cholecystectomies performed in 65-year-old patients or more, from January 1, 2007 to February 28, 2012. Results: Of the 367 cholecystectomies, were performed in women (74.5%) and 139 in men (25.5%). Most of the patients (82%) had a surgical time from 45 to 50 minutes. The hospitable stay for most of the patients (65%) was 24 to 36 hours. Minor complications were presented in 16 patients (2.9%), no major complication were reported. Conclusions: The laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the treatment of choice for the Gallstone and its complications in the elderly in the context of integral attention that guarantees the best conditions of the patient before the surgery.
