ABSTRACT

Objective: Our aim was to analyze the relationship between some family characteristics and the suicide attempt in adolescents. Design: We conducted an observational and descriptive study. Materials and Methods: A randomized questionnaire was applied to 33 adolescents in Jalisco State capital, Guadalajara,in Mexico. Characteristics of the adolescent and his/her family structure were explored, and the questionnaire also contained a section with Lickert-type questions concerning the following: 1) couple dynamics; 2) presence of conflicts; 3) communication and expressing affection; 4) establishment of rules in the family, and 5) financial difficulties. Responses were analyzed by categories according to scores (mild, moderate, and severe). We applied χ2. Results and Conclusions: Based on study results, we concluded that the suicide attempt is determined by affective interactions in the family within an economic context as shown by financial difficulties (odds ratio [OR], 4.83; confidence interval [CI], 1.64–14.01), conflict management and aggressiveness (OR, 2.29; CI 1.11–4.69), couple dynamics (OR, 2.46; C1, 0.03–5.79), inadequate communication (OR, 4.9; CI, 2.25–10.87), and the set of family dimensions (OR, 3.46;CI,1.68–7.15).
