ABSTRACT

Gastric adenocarcinoma represents a health problem worldwide due to its high incidence and mortality rates. It is the fourth most common malignancy and the second leading cause of cancer death. Its prognosis is highly dependent on the stage at diagnosis, usually an advanced stage, requiring demanding treatments and costs. Although it is a worldwide problem, different national prevalence rates have led to different options; in Japan, there is universal screening of the population using fluoroscopy, followed by conventional upper digestive endoscopy with biopsies for the positive results, while in most other developed countries, the low incidence rate makes screening not costeffective.
