ABSTRACT

Premenstrual syndrome is a collection of over 150 symptoms that affect women, starting in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle and disappear in the follicular phase, followed by a symptom-free interval. Its etiology is related to alterations in the neuroendocrine response of the ovary and gonadal steroid levels. To establish the diagnosis should be ruled diseases or other disorders. The symptoms must interfere with daily work and social activities and repeated in each menstrual cycle. For diagnosis of the symptoms must be present during the 5 days before the period and at least three consecutive menstrual cycles and complete within 4 days of the start of the period. Physical symptoms are the same for PMS and PMDD. Depending on the severity of the symptoms experienced by the patient should guide the choice of treatments. Mild cases can be treated with changes in lifestyle and pharmacological therapies and in severe cases require drug therapy.
