Appendicitis at pediatric ages, appendectomy, appendicitis.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To review the most outstanding aspects on appendicitis applied to the pediatric age, from its epidemiology, physiopathology, clinical signs, laboratory, imaging, to the most up-dated treatment.
Setting:Second level health care hospital.
Design:Review article.
Selection of studies:The most representative up-dated worldwide literature was reviewed (119 references).
Data extraction:We searched for the epidemiological, physiopathological aspects, the clinical signs, laboratory tests, imaging, and treatment.
Results:Acute appendicitis is the main surgical diagnosis in all emergency services of the country, therefore; we focused this review on those patients in whom a delay in diagnosis can occur or its masking with undesired and ill-fated consequences. On the premise that the general surgeon has no surgical training in pediatric patients, it is necessary, in the absence of a pediatric surgeon, to perform the surgical procedure in time and manner, avoiding delay in treatment.
Conclusion:We provide an up-dated guideline of the appendicular disease at pediatric ages, during which the disease must be identified and treated opportunely and adequately.
