ABSTRACT

Knowing the history of medical science is a necessity for professional medical culture. In our field knowing our past helps us to understand our historical moment, which motivated us to conduct this study to outline the history of maxillofacial surgery specialty in Cuba, in spite of the virtual absence of historical literature on this subject. A historical research was undertaken. For this purpose open interviews were conducted to colleagues. The interviewees were explained the purpose and intent of the authors to write this article. All interviewees gave their consent to be included in this investigation. A literature review was performed using the query to SciELO Cuba database, newspapers were consulted. An overview of the path taken by this specialty was obtained, and the role of different top figures in teaching and assistance was emphasized.
