ABSTRACT
After almost any preparation on the tooth structure, the Smear Layer will be covering the dentin surface. The role of the Smear Layer in Restorative Dentistry has been considered important for the strategic position at the interfase of the restorative materials and the dentin matrix. The Smear Layer should be removed or altered according with the needs required with the adhesive systems currently used. The elimination of the Smear Layer and the creation of a strong and stable Hybrid Layer may promote adhesion to tooth structure and overcome bacterial penetration.
