ABSTRACT
Infertility is defined as a condition in which a couple has been unable to conceive after one year of unprotected intercourse or the inability to carry a pregnancy through to a live birth. Recent studies have shown a relationship between periodontal disease and a range of adverse conditions during pregnancy, including preterm birth, low birth weight, restricted fetal growth, preeclampsia, and perinatal mortality. However, little research has been done into the period prior to conception, despite the fact that some authors have suggested that periodontal treatment during pregnancy is of little benefit, which could indicate that the intervention is being carried out too late in the process. The hypothesis that such authors suggest in regard to this relationship is that, in cases where there is severe periodontal disease, oral microorganisms can disseminate via the bloodstream and harm membranes, thus impeding implantation and, in the case of males, even contaminate semen, resulting in infertility. Furthermore, it has been suggested that periodontal disease is an indicator of a systemic inflammatory hyper-response to remote infections.
