ABSTRACT

Alginates are impression materials used in dentistry to get antagonist casts and stone dies. The presence of chromatic alginates on the dental market has been influenced by the advantage that they offer in the clinical guidance when the change of color takes place. Innovating technology has achieved the creation of new chromatic alginates. Objective: To evaluate and compare the properties between experimental chromatic alginates of several brands, and also to compare color changes and the time at what they occur. Methods: Evaluated alginates were: Jeltrate, Cavex, Kromopan, Experimental 2 and Experimental 4. Tests as Compatibility with gypsum, setting time, working time, Permanent Deformation, Compressive Strength, Strain in Compression and Deterioration were done according to ADA’s Specification No. 18. Color changes were compared visually. Numeric Results were analyzed by one way ANOVA and Tukey Test. Results: All evaluated alginates in this study accomplished with parameters required by ADA’s Specification No. 18 for each test. All of them have different color changes at different times. Conclusion: Experimental Alginates 2 and 4 can be used as appropriate chromatic alginates for dental use.
