ABSTRACT

This paper reports the case of a 66-year-old man, who four weeks after right subclavian central venous catheter was retired began with asthenia, adynamia, headache, pain and swelling in the right neck area. A Doppler and a contrast CT corroborated the diagnosis of right jugular vein and ipsilateral subclavian vein thrombosis. Anticoagulation treatment with low molecular weight heparin was administered for five days and then we began formal anticoagulation with vitamin K antagonist. There is little information regarding this pathology but some studies have reported among the causes: malignancy 32.7%, venous catheters 22.4% and prothrombotic 8.2%. The clinical manifestations in frequency order is: fever, increased white blood count, neck pain in the thrombi region, swelling in the neck area and string sign among others. Doppler US and CT are the gold standard for diagnosis, and the treatment is based on anticoagulation.
