Cancer of the rectum in a patient younger than 40 years of age

Objective: We report the case of a young man with a diagnosis of cancer of the rectum, treated at Ciudad Victoria, capital city of the state of Tamaulipas, Mexico, making emphasis on the age of presentation of the cancer.
Setting: General Hospital, Ministry of Health, Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas; 2nd level health care hospital.
Description of the case: Young man, 27 years old, with a diagnosis of adenocarcinoma of the rectum, locally advanced, subjected to surgical treatment with Miles type abdominal-perineal resection, and adjuvant chemotherapy. Despite the radical treatment, the evolution was bad, with recurring disease and death of the patient in less than 2 years.
Conclusion: In the studied case, the tumor presented an aggressive invasive behavior, recurring loco-regionally and at distance.
