Osteoarticular tuberculosis, primary infection, bacilli.

ABSTRACT

Tuberculosis has been a health concern for several years, and millions of people are affected with this disease. Although the infection may be found on all continents, orthopaedic surgeons working in south and southwest Asia are most likely to attend cases of osteoarticular tuberculosis. This location of tuberculosis is most frequent in crowded areas, poor sanitation and malnutrition. Bone tuberculosis is originated by hematogenous dissemination by a primary infection, but rarely the bacilli gets in to the musculoskeletal system by local spread o lymphatic dissemination. Only a small number of patients with tuberculosis will have osteoarticular involvement, and the half will have spinal disease. Although antimicrobial chemotherapy is highly effective, the most important variable predicting outcome is the stage of disease at presentation.
