ABSTRACT

Objective: to determine the level of knowledge ´s development on the illness and the task of taking care in main caretakers of schizophrenic patients.
Methods: this concern a non-experimental, descriptive and traverse study, developed in San Cristóbal municipality, Artemisa, in the period of January to March of 2012. For the gathering of information was applied the Questionnaire for the knowledge about illness and task of taking care of the schizophrenic patient (CETCE in Spanish) to a sample of 31 caretakers of patient with paranoid schizophrenia.
Results: knowledge’s are centered in levels of medium and insufficient development (45.2 % and 32.2 %, respectively). 100 % of the caretakers recognized schizophrenia like an illness that goes through periods of crisis and compensation, 74.2 % like a severe mental illness that affects in a general way behavior of whom suffers it and 71 % that causes disability and dependence for the person. The 61.3 % recognizes genetic problems and stress like main causes of the illness. The 54.8% reported schizophrenia type the patient had, however, 82.4 % of them was not able to recognize the essential characteristics of the diagnosis category.
Conclusion: tendency toward medium and insufficient development of the knowledge, being like indicators: cause and form of evolution of the illness the most insufficient, while the most satisfactory were: assistance resources that can be used in the treatment of the schizophrenic patient, characteristic of the illness and relative aspects to the task of taking care.
