Evaluation of the knowledge about Natural and Traditional Medicine in dentists of Playa municipality

ABSTRACT

Introduction: in Cuba the contents about Natural and Traditional Medicine (NTM) are comprised in the syllabus of the Dentistry career (Plan of Study C) from last decade. However it is still observed that the dentists don't make a definitive appropriation of this knowledge.
Objective: Tto evaluate the level of knowledge about therapies of NTM in dentists of Playa municipality.
Material and Methods: it was made a descriptive study of transversal cut, from January to May 2012, with the application of a questionnaire to a sample of 88 dentists of Playa municipality. The studied variables were: years of graduate, specialty, master, knowledge of the therapeutic effect of therapies of NTM, knowledge of the dentistry indication of therapies of NTM, knowledge of the ways of preparation of medications of NTM and level of knowledge about therapies of NTM. The questionnaires were evaluated by criterions established for this investigation.
Results: in the sample the 45,5% corresponded professionals with 1 to 10 years of graduated and 60,2% to specialists in Integral General Dentistry. The major percent of knowledge Well it was observed in the therapeutics effects of medicinal plants and in the dentistry indication of ozone therapy. More that half part showed Well knowledge and Regular about the manner of preparing the medications of NTM.
Conclusions: in the interviewees the level of knowledge Regular about therapies of NTM of use in dentistry prevailed.
