ABSTRACT

Introduction: Rhinosinusitis is a common cause of outpatient consult. The main symptoms are headache, purulent rhinorrhea, and facial pain. In our population there are no records that certify these impressions. The use of data collection sheets facilitates the organization of information and subsecuent decision making. Objective: To describe the main characteristics gathered through data collection sheets in a population with rhinosinusitis, and to discuss the results with the information previously published. Material and methods: It is an observational, descriptive and transversal study in which we register, through data collection sheets, consecutive patients of the outpatient clinic of Otolaryngology of our hospital, from May to November, 2012. Results: 32 patients were studied, mean age 38 ± 12 years. Allergies were the most frequent antecedent (46%). The most frequent symptoms were facial pain (87%) and nasal congestion (93%). The main finding through nasal endoscopy was rhinorrea through the middle meatus (71%). 65% of the patients presented acute rhinosinusitis. Discussion: Published studies have revealed that gathering of information through diaries, questionnaires and physical examination is useful. In our study, the collection sheets identify the main symptoms, signs, and physical examination. Conclusions: Collection sheets are a useful instrument for accurate gathering of data from outpatients. This data is useful for posterior comparative studies.
