Chronology of dental eruption in a population in southeast Mexico

ABSTRACT

There is no standard chronology in dental eruption given that it varies depending on a range of factors such as race, gender, heredity, nutrition, ethnicity, and socioeconomic conditions. Dental eruption charts are important given that they are used in a wide range of dental fields. Objective: To determine the chronology of dental eruption in schoolchildren aged between 6 and 9 years in a population in southeast Mexico. Material and methods: An observational, analytical, prospective, cross-sectional study. The sample comprised 212 schoolchildren aged between 6 and 9 years old from two rural communities in the state of Yucatán: Catmís and Maní. Results: In both sexes, the first tooth to erupt was the lower central incisor. The results revealed that the chronology of dental eruption in the schoolchildren in the population from southeast Mexico was delayed compared to the standards established by Hurme, and early compared to that of a population in Temoaya, Mexico State, with statistically significant differences (p ≤ 0.05) in both comparisons. Conclusions: The values obtained for the chronology of dental eruption in the population from southeast Mexico in the study proved to be delayed compared to those reported in an Anglo-Saxon population and to those reported for a population in central Mexico.
