ABSTRACT

Epstein-Barr Virus is the causative agent of infectious mononucleosis. The common manifestations are fever, pharyngitis, limphadenopathy, hepatosplenomegaly and atypical lymphocytosis. Infectious mononucleosis is caused by an intense cytotoxic T lymphocyte response to eliminate EBV-infected B cells. Rarely, it results in hepatic injury with severe jaundice. The histological features are characterized by a mild increase in portal inflammation that consists of lymphocytes. In this case Epstein-Barr Virus did not infect hepatocytes, but infected T cells.
