ABSTRACT

To evaluate the results by LASIK for treatment of myopia and myopic astigmatism. In 97 eyes (56 patients) which were submitted to surgical treatment of myopia and simple and compound myopic astigmatism we did a descriptive and cross section study at refractive surgery unit of ophthalmology´s service at Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital, from august 2009 to august 2010. Mean age was 31,5 year old; the most frequent treatment was compound myopic astigmatism; the mean visual acuity without correction after surgery was 0,2 (sd ± 0,2), it was 0,7 (sd ± 0,2) twenty fourth hours post-LASIK surgery and 0,9 (sd ± 0,1) six month later. The visual acuity with correction was maintained in 0,9 (sd ± 0, 07) post-LASIK surgery. In all type of ametropia the visual acuity was significant, it was the best. The simple myopia improved in nine lines of Snellen visual acuity. There were a difference between preoperative visual acuity and post-surgery LASIK visual acuity; it was more significant in moderate and higher. There were decreased sphere-cylinder component and keratometry. Efficacy and safety indexes were 1.1 and 97% of patients showed a residual refraction of ± 1diopter. There were light complications. LASIK is a safety, efficient and predictable technique for patient with myopia and moderate and higher myopic astigmatism.
