ABSTRACT

The professor Gloria María Varela Puente was born on 11 April 1922 in Palma Soriano, beginning the studies of medicine in January of 1942 in the Universidad de La Habana, where reaches the title of medicine. In the year 1959 is appointed interim professor of the department-chair of pediatrics of the school of medicine and in 1972 concedes her the leadership of the miscellaneous service at Pedro Borrás Astorga Pediatric Hospital, and more advance the category of permanent professor. It realised medical missions in Algeria and Mozambique, reaffirming his feelings of partnership and international solidarity. In the year 1984 initiates the teaching of postgraduate like boss of Rheumatologic Pediatric Service at Pedro Borrás Astorga Pediatric Hospital, participating in numerous investigations and publications fundamentally on this speciality. In her professional life obtains numerous recognitions such as the medals by 25 and 50 years of work in the public health, two medals of internationalist doctor and the Pepito Tey medal. On 8 March of the 2003, confers hes the special educational category of professor of Merit of the Upper Institute of Medical Sciences of The Habana, and for being pioneering, master and guide of the specialist of pediatric rheumatology, awarded her the honorary nomination of Mother of the Pediatric Rheumatology in Cuba. She died on 28 December of the 2005, after many complications of her delicate health.
