Key words:

rupture, aortic sinus.

ABSTRACT

Rupture of one of the aortic sinuses is an extremely uncommon condition, usually secondary to aneurysmatic dilation of congenital origin of one of the three sinuses, as a result of tissular alterations in the aorta. Rupture can also be secondary to inflammatory and infectious diseases or of traumatic origin. We present the case of a male patient, 26 years of age, without relevant medical history; it differs significantly from other cases reported in the medical literature because the rupture of the sinus occurred without aneurysmatic dilation, endocarditis, inflammatory disease, or trauma. We also analyze the usefulness and significant advantages cardiovascular magnetic resonance offers in cases involving rupture of aortic sinuses: it helps to evaluate left and right ventricular function and hemodynamic patterns, identify aortic insufficiency, quantify aortic-cardiac short circuit, or view the fistulous tract; it also helps evaluate the anatomy of the aortic root in a non-invasive manner.
