ABSTRACT

Despite the universal trend of decline observed in the rates of gastric cancer in recent years, the disease still represents a great social burden in most countries. Most of the cases are discovered in an advanced stage when the prognosis is poor. The appropriate strategy to control the disease is prevention and although the World Health Organization has determined that the Helicobacter pylori infection is the primary cause of the disease, the vast majority of people who are infected never develop cancer because multiple factors modulate the outcome of the infection.
