ABSTRACT

Postmenopausal bleeding is a common complaint in general medicine practice. The bleeding could be a warning sign because approximately 10% of women who presents postmenopausal bleeding have endometrial cancer; however most of the causes are benign. The endometrial cancer represents the most common gynecological malignancy and it is why the approach must be direct to rule out cancer and perform early diagnosis, to offer the patients individualized treatment. It is essential to recognize the risk factors for endometrial cancer, because the patients with high suspicion may have to be referred immediately to specialist. The transvaginal ultrasound has a similar sensitivity to endometrial biopsy. With an endometrial thickness of less than 3mm cancer can be excluded with a high degree of confidence; the chances of finding endometrial cancer in a woman with postmenopausal bleeding with endometrial thickness less than 4mm is reported as 0,8 per cent.
