ABSTRACT

Microscopic colitis (MC) is a syndrome characterized by chronic diarrhea. Includes two subtypes, lymphocytic colitis and collagenous which differ by the presence or absence of a band of subepithelial collagen, being similar in both the clinic. The diagnosis is made by colonoscopy showing a normal mucosa and histological alterations through biopsy taken during the procedure. Affects elderly patients, especially women and has been linked to the ingestion of certain drugs and some autoimmune diseases. In the present review is an analysis of the current evidence on the subject, with special emphasis on the diagnosis and current treatment options.
