ABSTRACT

Presentation of penetrating trauma patients increased worldwide, trauma is divided into stab wounds and firearm wounds. They are potentially life threatening because there are associated with hemorrhagic shock and visceral injury. Evaluation of these patients begins with a detail clinical history and physical examination, in conjunction with imaging and diagnostic tests assist therapeutic decisions. Hypotension and peritonitis are indications for a surgical approach, if there are not such signs, a no surgical management can be provided, which is part of management new trend, for these kind of patients. The current surgical approach, offers exploratory laparotomy versus laparoscopy, there is a trend to use laparoscopy because it is a method that reduces the number of laparotomies and patient morbidity. The use of prophylactic antibiotic therapy to prevent infection is in debate. The penetrating trauma patient approach is highly important, because each case is unique and should be individually addressed, to provide the best to the patient and reduce morbidity and mortality rates.
