ABSTRACT

Gastric cancer is one of the main causes of mortality due to cancer in the world, and despite the fact that its incidence has been in declining over the years, it still remains as the most frequent cancer in developing countries. The most frequent type of cancer is called adenocarcinoma (90 %), with a predominantly distal intestinal variant and other diffuse. Among the most recognized risk factors that have been associated we can find chronic atrophic gastritis with intestinal metaplasia, Helicobacter pylori infection, diets rich in salted, smoked or dried food, smoking, and pernicious anemia, amongst others.
