ABSTRACT

The prevalence of metastasis in the eye in Costa Rica is unknown. Most eye metastases occur in patients with endstage cancer. Although the most common intraocular tumor in adults is choroidal melanoma, should rule out other diagnostic possibilities such as a history of cancer in women is the most common cause breast and lung cancer in men. Approximately only 25% of patients with metastatic ocular cancer begin their first clinical manifestation in the eye. Metastatic tumors of the eye are presented unilaterally to 80%, mostly compromising the choroid. Hepatocellular carcinoma is a rare cause of metastasis to the eye, and even rarer to first manifest ocular systemic level. The prognosis is poor, because only 10 to 20 % of hepatocellular carcinomas can be removed completely.
