Location and measurement of the palatine artery in cadavers

ABSTRACT

Background: The size of the palatal connective subepithelial tissue graft is dictated by the thickness of the palatal mucosa and the position of the greater palatine neurovascular. Objective: Determine the height of the palatine artery in relation to premolars and molars of cadaver in Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México amphitheater and the most frequent location of anterior palatine foramen. Material and methods: Cross-sectional study in 8 cadavers between 50 and 70 years old. The measurements were in millimeters by the use of a periodontal probe. Results: The most common location of palatine foramen was between the second and third molars (50%). The mean distance was 14.7 ± 1.9 mm. The greater palatine artery bundle position in relation to the first premolar and first molar was 9.5 ± 1.4 mm and 12.8 ± 1.9 mm. Conclusion: The findings suggest ethnic differences with other world regions. The palate is an acceptable and safe donor site.
