Human herpes virus 6, viral encephalitis.

ABSTRACT

The clinical manifestations of human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) primary infection include roseola (exanthema subitum) in 20% of infected children, undifferentiated fever without focal signs, and other acute febrile diseases (febrile seizures, encephalitis and other neurological disorders, and mononucleosis-like syndromes), frequently accompanied by cervical and retrooccipital lymphadenopathies, digestive and respiratory signs, and myringitis.
In case of central nervous system involvement, there have been severe cases documented with important neurological sequels despite treatment with ganciclovir (HHV-6 is intrinsecally resistant to acyclovir, unlike other herpes virus). Next, we present a case of a patient with HHV-6 encephalitis treated with ganciclovir with partial response to it.
