Third party payers in Mexico, health expenditures in Mexico, highly specialized services, cost containment strategies in health, health financing sources.

ABSTRACT

Demographic and epidemiological transformation in our population has irreversibly changed health conditions; the trend now is focused on chronic-degenerative diseases. The demand for highly specialized services is increasing, and third party payers have considerably grown their share with health services providers. In our country, 6.1% of gross domestic product is intended for health spending, of which 51% is disbursed to private institutions. Asociación Mexicana de Instituciones de Seguros reports that only about 7.6% of the Mexican population has a private insurance policy, which is clearly insufficient to satisfy the population needs. Third party payers represent over 70% of ABC Medical Center’s annual income; therefore, in a joint effort, we have developed specific strategies to provide quality multidisciplinary treatments focused on patient safety with the best medical practices and reasonable prices. We have achieved the distinction of being named «excellence centers for patient referral» by some of our major trading partners. Despite this, it is important to reflect that the Mexican health system is not sustainable under its current structure, that is the reason why strategies need to be developed with the participation of all involved parties to provide reliable, transparent and financially accessible services. Only in this way, private hospitals may increase patient volumes and improve the services they provide.
