ABSTRACT

The importance of distinguishing the difference between palliative care and living will is highly significant, focusing these concepts on patients’ quality of life, always respecting the patient autonomy on the decision making under appropriate information basis and, if necessary, of his/her representative or his/her responsible relative, with the premise that the living will is a way to provide palliative health care. Do not forget that in Mexico euthanasia is a crime and is far from being a synonymous of palliative care, since palliative care should always have to consider the welfare of patients. The goal of palliative care is to ensure the best quality of life possible –a concept that can only be defined by the sick person– in order for the disease to lead life to a natural end, without falling into euthanasia or support for suicide.
