ABSTRACT
Background: The frequencies of complications was compared in the appendicular base closure regardless of the appendiceal phase, using the linear stapler or endoloop and also the time required in both techniques to determine which method could be recommended for advanced stages.
Methods: The study is prospective, observational and descriptive. 750 procedures were studied in which 403 patients were in the endoloop group and 347 patients were in the linear stapler group, both operated by the same surgeon. Computer-based electronic records were collected in Microsoft Excel 2010 and statistical analysis IBM SPSS 21 was used.
χ
2 test was used.
Results: The study states that there is no statistically difference between linear stapler or appendicular endoloop in early phases (Phases 1 and 2), however, this was not observed at later phases (Phases 3 and 4), particularly for abscess (Phases 3 and 4) and dehiscence (Phase 4).
Conclusions: We recommend the use of the linear stapler for appendicular base closure in stages three and four, regardless the higher costs due to benefits to the patients, such as lowering the incidence of complications.
