ABSTRACT
Objective. To correlate the glucose concentration in blood in newborn infants before and one hour after ingesting calostrum.
Material and methods. Sixty one healthy neonates at term were studied to in the first hours of its life. After two hours fasting the neonates were feeding with the calostrum obtain for the mother. Before and one hour after feeding the infants the blood concentration of glucose was measured.
Results. The mean volume of calostrum extracted was 7.8 ± 4.9 mL and the basal glycemia it was 74.8 ± 14.2 mg/dL (4.1 ± 0.8 mmol/L) and one hour after was 88.2 ± 21.1 mg/dL (4.9 ± 1.2 mmol/L), p = 0.0001. Only in those with ingested above 5 mL had increments in the glucose concentration (p ‹ 0.05). The correlation between glycemia and ingestion of calostrum was r = 0.58 (p ‹ 0.05).
Conclusions. As it was expected there is a blood glucose correlation between with calostrum ingested, however children that ingested less than 5 mL do not change the level go blood glucose concentration, inside of normal limits.
